WhatsApp will no longer be a thing for Smartphones only as it will be rolling out to millions of basic cellphones as well, although only those using the kaiOS
The KaiOS is a Linux-based Operating System, and while it has risen to become the third most sorted-after OS, it has aimed to bridge the gap between the Smartphones and the Feature phones. As part of its effort to bring relevancy to the basic cellphones, the US-owned OS now offers support for WhatsApp, an app that has only been limited to just smartphones.
There is no doubt that Facebook is the main guy behind the latest development, and while it won’t be stopping with just offering support for WhatsApp, it also plans to throw the gates wide open for more apps such as Messenger, and maybe Instagram in the nearest future.
The messaging app is now available on the KaiStore, making it available to “millions” of low-cost KaiOS cellphones with at least 256MB of RAM. “Most” KaiOS phones will come preloaded with WhatsApp in the third quarter of the year, and that’s no small number when over 100 million of the phones have shipped to date.
On the side of WhatsApp, its presence on the KaiOS will even fetch for the Facebook-owned app a larger user base, considering that it has grown to become a dominant social media platform with over 1.5 billion users, and with the latest development, you can only expect the numbers to be on the rise.
As a matter of fact, there are so many people who still can’t afford an average smartphone, neither the ‘so-called’ budget-friendly smartphones, hence they are denied access to apps like the WhatsApp, however, giving that basic cellphones with KaiOS now offers support for such relevant app, such category of people will now be connected with friends and family who are already on the platform.
Also, WhatsApp is not the first to debut on the KaiOS, however, it takes the shine over others because it is believed to be more wanted than any others. Before now, the likes of Facebook, Youtube, and Google Map has been around, so the inception of WhatsApp on the OS will only be an added advantage.
